How to Set Goals for Thai Boxing Training

Setting goals for Muay Thai practice is an important part of keeping yourself interested. No matter how disciplined you are, it’s extremely difficult for people to stay interested in something when they never feel like they’re getting anywhere with it.

Here are some basic ways to set goals for your Muay Thai boxing training.

Realism

Focus on making small goals. If you’re in your mid-40s and you’re taking up Muay Thai kickboxing for the first time in your life, set realistic goals. For example, set a goal of losing 10 pounds over the course of a month and being able to see your abdominal muscles if you’re mostly into it for physical fitness.

Set a goal of being able to spar with your instructor for 30 seconds without getting winded if you’re trying to improve your Muay Thai fighting ability or working on one of the techniques to make your round kicks more powerful. These are realistic, intelligent and achievable goals. If you set your goal to have your first Muay Thai fight in a month, or being able to do 20 pull-ups in the next week but can only do 4. Then it can be pretty safe to say that your objectives are not really that practical. Unless your some kind of freak athlete.

Milestones

Set milestones for yourself when you are setting goals for Thai boxing training. Talking to your instructor is a great way to do this. For example, make a commitment to, within a month, be able to deliver 25 consecutive knees with a great deal of speed and power without becoming winded or losing your rhythm or balance. These types of goals offer you a way to improve your technique at the same time you give yourself a psychological reward.

Other Thai boxing Students

One way to set a goal for yourself without anyone else being involved in it, is to pick a student whose technique you really admire. Set a goal of being able to master some of that students Muay Thai fighting skills.

Such as;

  • Having the ability to punch faster with your jab
  • Pivoting on your cross for more power
  • Matching their push-up ratio
  • Getting better at your footwork movements
  • Using that Muay Thai students fighting combinations
  • Mastering his/hers defensive blocks and counter striking techniques

Maybe even being able to hang with him/her in a sparring match as a way to measure your progress.

As you get better, pick more advanced Muay Thai kickboxing students and work toward being able to give them a good run for their money in a Thai boxing sparring match.

This not only helps you to set goals that you can achieve, it also tends to get you into the social aspect of the studio.
